The legal profession is facing pressures that are unique in its centuries-old history. Commoditization and IT, for example, are making inroads, with services like Legal OnRamp and LegalZoom.com taking work away from lawyers. Mark Szabo is vice president, managing director, of the Karo Group strategic branding agency; he's also a member of the Alberta Bar association. Drawing from his experiences as a lawyer and as a communications professional, Szabo suggests that law firms can, and should, benefit from thinking of themselves more as creative communication firms and organizing themselves accordingly. A collaborative, design-thinking approach to the practice of law, he believes, would address a critical component missing from most legal reasoning and would improve a law firm's ability to thrive in spite of commoditization pressures: ""Collaboration is the future of law, if not the present. Those who embrace it and bring it to bear for their clients will have a distinct advantage: survival.""
