Design Management Europe is a network of partners across Europe that aims to demonstrate and promote to businesses the commercial benefits of good design management practices. Toward this end, DME surveyed more than 400 small and medium-sized businesses that they considered ""active design users"" in regards to their design capabilities and practices. The results concurred with what some observers had feared: The business approach to design is still largely undeveloped, and most enterprises think of design as being about things rather than processes. An even more striking conclusion was that neither the active use of design nor the level of design experience achieved by a company necessarily leads to the development of design skills. On the plus side, there is significant evidence-though not causal proof-that there is a correlation between design management level and business performance. The authors speculate and enlarge upon these findings.
